Description
Being a game fish, it is an aggressive predator of Karanteen, Shad, Blacktail, Pinky and Mullet. It often moves in shoals between the backline wave and he inner surf zone chasing it's prey. Although fishing for it from the beach is successful, it is sometimes easier to swim a live bait off a prominent set of rocks giving you access to deep water. Procure suitable live bait like Shad, Karanteen or Blacktail, and quickly but carefully put out the live bait in a rock pool or aeration bucket. Try and bait the fish while your hands are wet or submerged in water. Garrick can be pursued successfully when Shad or Karanteen are feeding in shoals, usually at high tide with the best time being during the day
Typical Bite
Because you are using live bait, you will feel the bait swimming at the end of the line, however when a Garrick is present, your live bait will become more active. When you feel the bait is being moved, wait until the Garrick takes the bait before setting the hook
Pro Tips
- Insert the bottom hook between the pelvic fins of the live bait, hook point down and facing the tail. Insert the top hook between the anal and tail fin, keeping this hook taught with the main line. There should be slack nylon between both hooks
- Gently cast the live bait into an outgoing current and allow the bait to swim out
- The Garrick is edible akthough not highly esteemed. Tag and release should be encouraged
- Always sharpen your hooks
