Description
This fish can be found in and around estuaries and lagoons, although it will come in close to the shore where it feeds on sand prawn, sealice and ghost crab. It forces a jet of water through ots mouth to blow its food out of the sand. The grunter is a bottom feeder so choose a spot where a sandbank is being washed by the waves and fish in the gullies next to it. It requires a neatly prepared bait with a minimum of cotton like prawn, sealice, squid or fillet. Grunter are particularly sensitive to cold and sudden temperature change, and prefer fairly clean water. A good time would be in the morning before the sun is high, or late afternoon
Typical Bite
Grunter are timid and wary fish and will often merely pick up the bait and hold it in its mouth. You will detect a slight movement on your line, lean back slightly and the fish will move off with the bait. Often the only way of distinguishing a grunter bite, is if you know grunter are being caught in that area
Pro Tips
- This trace should be secured to your nylon using the ring of the swivel that has the hook secured to it, use the other for your sinker
- The grunter is a fine table fish
- Always sharpen your hooks and ensure that the point of the hook is exposed when baited
- The grunters gills are very sharp, so be careful of your fingers
- On occasion you may need to employ the sliding sinker method
