Description
Most of these sharks are present in the surf zone, and although few anglers pursue them, they provide excellent sport. They can be found in gullies adjacent to sandbanks, especially as the tide is coming in. They are also accessible from rocky points that allow access to deeper water
These sharks feed on virtually anything they can ambush, particularly when the water is discoloured. Although they will take almost any bait, recommended baits are mackerel head or fillet, mullet, shad, sardine or octopus leg
Typical Bite
Because these sharks are mostly heavier than 4 or 5kg, you will feel the movement of your bait and often the hard pull will follow, or your line will become slack. Sometimes after detecting movement only, you may need to move the bait slightly to encourage the shark to take the bait
Pro Tips
- This trace should be secured to your nylon line using the ring of the swivel that has the hook tied on to it, use the other for your sinker
- Small Grey Sharks make good eaating, if they have been bled straight after being caught
- Never attempt to remove a hook from a shark's mouth by hand. Always use a pair of long nose pliers or a hook remover
- Handle the shark by it's pectoral fin, not by it's tail
- Always sharpen your hooks and ensure the hook point is exposed when baited
