Description
The Kob is a shoaling fish and being a bottom feeder will come in close to the shoreline where there are fairlly deep gullies off beaches or bays. Itfeeds naturally on small fish, crabs, squid, prawns and octopus, being able to hunt it's prey by senses and scent as well as sight, and can best be pursued in discoloured, turbulent water or at night
It prefers cooler water and is also tolerabt of low salinity, hence it is often found in estuaries and tidal rivers. It will readily take sardine whole or filleted, sardine and squid combined, karanteen or shad fillet, however a live mullet, karanteen or shad prove very successful
Typical Bite
As a rule it is best to let the kob pick up the bait a couple times as they generally do and while keeping enough tension, allow the fish to move off with the bait before setting the hook
Pro Tips
- The sinker lead on this trace is a limited slide sinker, although you can employ a running sinker by removing the section of nylon and tying the sinker strap and bead above the swivel on your main line
- Kob is a fine table fish, and has pretty stones called otooliths which can be removed from the head
- Always sharpen your hooks and ensure the hook point is exposed when baited
Permits, Bag and Size Restrictions
All saltwater anglers require a National Fishing Permit obtainable from any post office. Almost all fish species have bag and size restrictions which are subject to change. Please familiarize yourself with these
